Background of the Study
Online communication in Nigeria is increasingly characterized by the use of diverse social media platforms, each fostering distinct language practices. WhatsApp and Instagram, as two widely used platforms, exhibit contrasting communication styles. WhatsApp, primarily used for private and immediate messaging, supports informal language, frequent code‑switching, and spontaneous conversational patterns (Adetayo, 2023). In contrast, Instagram, with its visually oriented content and public engagement, encourages users to craft more curated messages that blend images with text, leading to creative linguistic expressions. This comparative study examines how these platforms shape language use in Nigeria, focusing on differences in formality, lexical choices, and syntactic structures. By analyzing message patterns on WhatsApp and Instagram, the research aims to uncover the underlying sociocultural and technological influences that drive online communication practices. The study further explores how these digital environments affect identity construction and social interaction, contributing to a nuanced understanding of modern Nigerian discourse (Ibrahim, 2024).

Statement of the Problem
Despite the widespread use of both WhatsApp and Instagram in Nigeria, there is limited comparative research examining how these platforms differentially influence online communication practices. The distinctive affordances and audience expectations of each platform may lead to divergent linguistic behaviors, yet current studies often focus on one platform in isolation. This gap restricts our understanding of the interplay between private and public digital communication, hindering the development of comprehensive models of language change in the digital age. Without systematic comparative analysis, insights into the socio-cultural impacts of these platforms on language evolution remain incomplete (Chukwu, 2023).

Objectives of the Study

  • To compare language practices on WhatsApp and Instagram.

  • To analyze differences in formality, syntax, and lexical choices.

  • To assess the impact of platform affordances on digital identity formation.

Research Questions

  • How do language practices differ between WhatsApp and Instagram?

  • What factors drive these differences in online communication?

  • How do these variations influence digital identity and social interaction?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it provides a comparative analysis of Nigerian online communication across WhatsApp and Instagram, offering insights into how digital platforms shape language and identity. The findings will inform sociolinguistic theory and practical communication strategies in digital environments, benefiting educators, media practitioners, and policymakers (Olu, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
Limited to WhatsApp and Instagram communication among Nigerian users.

Definitions of Terms

  • Online Communication: The exchange of information via digital platforms.

  • WhatsApp: An instant messaging application for private interactions.
